Can AI help Americans overcome the political divide?

The above picture was created by the OpenAI program DALL.E when asked for an image that describes Americans’ anxiety caused by the political divide.

In my previous text, I grilled ChatGPT on immigration. I was disappointed that it operates within the same information set we hear daily in the mainstream media. If politicians and pundits got our immigration problems right, we would not have illegal immigration. ChatGPT is not intelligent enough to arrive at that conclusion on its own, yet. It might change soon.

I also spent a few hours interrogating ChatGPT about health care and climate change. Similarly, as with immigration, all questions seeking an evaluation of certain political ideas received elongated responses, which appeared as if written by a slick politician. Polish people would say that ChatGPT lighted one candle to God and another to the devil. It appears that the algorithm was written by youngsters who did not know the old American maxim: If you cannot state your point within two sentences, you are lying or do not know what you are talking about.

Below are three examples of my engaging ChatGPT in how to overcome our political divide. I asked not to bring opinions representing this or that side of the issue. I asked for arguments that could convince a person representing a certain point of view that the opposite side is right. Please let me know if any of the arguments put at least a shadow of a doubt about your opinions on the issues debated.

When reading my questions and the ChatPGT responses, please notice how cautious AI is in avoiding expressing negative opinions. It never said that the core argument for a given position was doubtful because of questionable data or flawed logic. On the other hand, its access to broad data is impressive, and we can anticipate it will be broadened soon. It cannot do it now, but ChatGPT may be able to tell you soon that stupidity, even if supported by millions and signed into law, is still stupidity.

The difference is that ChatGPT will not use that kind of bold language. It will dance around the sensitivities of the recipients much better than opinionated people like me can ever learn. Also, as a machine, it will be less intimidating. Ergo, it can give us a shot at overcoming the national divide.

Immigration

My inquiry:

Americans are deeply split on immigration. One of the dividing lines goes between supporters of more open immigration and supporters of restricted immigration. Proponents of increased immigration are for allowing a much larger number of immigrants than we have now. Their opponents opt for an even smaller number of legal immigrants and a more decisive blocking of illegal immigration. Please prepare two separate articles. The first one should be for supporters of increased immigration and should convince them that their opponents are right. The second article should be for supporters of very limited immigration and should convince them that their opponents are right.”

Here are two answers by ChatGPT:

Understanding the Case for Restricted Immigration
Immigration is a complex issue that affects every aspect of our society. While the benefits
of increased immigration are often highlighted, it's crucial to understand the arguments
for a more controlled approach.

Firstly, one of the most compelling reasons to support restricted immigration is the
prioritization of the employment and economic needs of current citizens. In an era where
economic stability is paramount, it's essential to ensure that domestic workers and
industries receive fair treatment. By controlling the influx of immigrants, we can prevent
the oversaturation of the job market and protect the interests of our workforce.

Secondly, restricted immigration can improve national security. By having a more stringent
immigration process, we can decrease the risk of potential threats and ensure the safety
of our citizens. This is not to say that all immigrants pose a threat, but rather that a more
thorough vetting process can help identify potential risks.

Lastly, controlling the influx of immigrants can help preserve national identity. While
diversity is a strength, it's also important to maintain a sense of unity and shared values.
By limiting immigration, we can ensure that newcomers have the time and resources to
integrate into our society and contribute positively to our cultural fabric.

However, it's important to balance these benefits against the potential costs and ethical
implications of limiting immigration. We must strive for a policy that respects the rights
and dignity of all individuals while also protecting our national interests.

Embracing the Benefits of Increased Immigration
Immigration is a multifaceted issue that requires a nuanced understanding. While the
arguments for restricted immigration are often emphasized, it's important to consider the
benefits of a more open approach.

Firstly, immigration contributes significantly to economic growth. Immigrants fill labor
shortages and increase the demand for goods and services, driving economic expansion.
They bring unique skills and perspectives that can lead to innovation and productivity
gains.

Secondly, immigration adds richness to our cultural landscape. The exchange of ideas and
values that comes with diversity can lead to a more vibrant and inclusive society. It allows
us to learn from each other and grow collectively, fostering a sense of global community.

Thirdly, immigration can strengthen national security. A diverse population can lead to
increased international alliances and a broader understanding of global issues. This
diversity can also make us more resilient and adaptable in the face of challenges.

From a humanitarian perspective, immigration provides an opportunity for individuals to
escape persecution and improve their quality of life. By welcoming immigrants, we uphold
the values of compassion and human dignity that are fundamental to our society.

Lastly, from an environmental perspective, immigration can enable individuals from areas
of high carbon emissions to transition to more sustainable lifestyles in countries with lower
carbon footprints.

However, it's crucial to address concerns about job competition or strain on resources
through policy solutions and education. We should strive to create inclusive policies that
promote the integration and success of immigrants in their new communities.

In conclusion, immigration, when managed thoughtfully and constructively, has the
potential to greatly benefit both the immigrant and the receiving community. It's an
opportunity we should embrace and support.

Health care

My inquiry:

Americans are deeply split on health care policy. One of the dividing lines goes between supporters of the government-managed or closely regulated universal health care, considered a public service. On the opposite side are proponents of health care run like any other service business. Please prepare two separate articles. The first one should be for supporters of the universal health care system and should convince them that market-driven health care is better. The second article should be for supporters of market-driven health care and should convince them that health care as a public service is better.”

The Power of Choice: Unleashing the Potential of Market-Driven Healthcare
Dear Supporters of Universal Health Care,

We understand your commitment to ensuring that every citizen has access to healthcare.
It's a noble goal, one that we share. However, we believe that a market-driven approach
can achieve this goal more effectively and efficiently. Here's why:
  1. Encourages Competition and Innovation: In a market-driven system, healthcare
providers compete for patients. This competition encourages innovation, as providers
strive to offer better services and treatments. It can lead to advancements in medical
    technology and improved patient care.
  2. Promotes Efficiency: Market forces naturally drive efficiency. Providers who can
deliver high-quality care at lower costs will attract more patients. This encourages
providers to streamline their operations and reduce waste.
  3. Enhances Choice and Personalization: A market-driven system gives patients
the freedom to choose their healthcare providers. It allows for personalized care, as
providers must cater to the individual needs and preferences of their patients to stay
    competitive.
  4. Responds to Demand: In a market-driven system, the supply of healthcare
services can quickly adjust to meet demand. This can lead to shorter wait times and
    more timely care.
We understand that a market-driven system is not without its challenges. However, with
the right regulations and safeguards in place, we believe it can deliver high-quality,
accessible, and affordable healthcare for all.
Healthcare for All: The Case for Universal Health Care
Dear Supporters of Market-Driven Health Care,

We appreciate your belief in the power of the free market to drive innovation and efficiency.
However, when it comes to healthcare, we believe that a universal system can better serve
the needs of all citizens. Here's why:
  1. Ensures Access for All: Universal health care guarantees that every citizen,
regardless of their income or social status, has access to the healthcare services they
need. This is not just a matter of social justice; a healthier population is more
productive and contributes more to society.
  2. Reduces Financial Risk: Illness can strike anyone, and the costs can be devastating.
Universal health care protects individuals and families from the financial risks
associated with serious illness or injury.
  3. Promotes Public Health: By ensuring access to preventive care, universal health
care can help to detect and treat health conditions early, before they become serious
and costly to treat. This promotes public health and reduces overall healthcare costs.
  4. Encourages Continuity of Care: In a universal system, patients can receive
ontinuous, coordinated care, rather than episodic care based on their ability to pay.
This can lead to better health outcomes and more efficient use of resources.
We understand that a universal system is not without its challenges. However, with the
right funding and management, we believe it can deliver high-quality, accessible, and
affordable healthcare for all.

Climate change

My inquiry:

Americans are deeply split on climate change policy. One of the dividing lines goes between supporters of the view that observed climate changes result mainly from human activities and that governments should make coordinated investments in technologies to stop, or preferably reverse, climate change. Opponents interpret observed climate change as caused mainly by natural causes, with the effects of human activities being noticeable but not decisive. Consequently, opponents of the anthropogenic concept of climate change see expenses to stop or reverse climate change as wasteful. Please write two articles, one to convince the supporters of the anthropogenic theory of climate change that their opponents are right. The second article should convince the opponents of the anthropogenic theory of climate change that their adversaries are right.”

Here are two answers by ChatGPT:

Understanding the Natural Factors in Climate Change

Climate change is a complex phenomenon, and it's essential to consider all contributing
factors, including natural ones, to fully understand it. While human activities undoubtedly
have an impact on our planet, there are compelling reasons to believe that natural causes
play a significant role in climate change.

Firstly, Earth's climate has been changing long before humans started industrial activities.
Ice ages and warm periods have alternated for millions of years due to natural factors such
as changes in Earth's orbit, solar radiation, and volcanic activity. These factors continue to
influence our climate today.

Secondly, the sun, our primary source of heat, has variable output. Periods of increased
solar activity can lead to warming trends on Earth. Conversely, periods of decreased
activity can lead to cooling trends.

Thirdly, it's important to consider the role of natural carbon sinks, such as forests and
oceans, in regulating the climate. These ecosystems absorb and store large amounts of
CO2, helping to balance the carbon cycle. Changes in these natural systems, due to factors
like ocean currents and forest growth, can significantly impact global temperatures.

Lastly, while it's true that human activities contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, it's
also true that these emissions are a small fraction of the total CO2 in the atmosphere. The
vast majority of CO2 comes from natural sources like plant respiration and volcanic
eruptions.

In conclusion, while it's crucial to reduce our carbon footprint, it's equally important to
understand and respect the powerful natural forces at play in our climate system. Only by
acknowledging the full complexity of climate change can we hope to address it effectively.

The Anthropogenic Influence on Climate Change: A Call to Action
Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time, and there is
overwhelming scientific consensus that human activities are its primary driver.
This article aims to shed light on the reasons why we should consider anthropogenic
climate change seriously.

Firstly, while it's true that climate change has occurred naturally in the past, the current
rate of change is unprecedented in Earth's history. The rapid increase in global
temperatures over the past century correlates strongly with the rise in greenhouse gas
emissions from human activities.

Secondly, the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere has increased by more than 40%
since the Industrial Revolution. This increase is directly attributable to human activities
such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation.

Thirdly, human-induced changes in land use, such as deforestation and urbanization,
have disrupted natural carbon sinks, leading to increased CO2 levels in the atmosphere.
These changes also contribute to a loss of biodiversity, further destabilizing our planet's
ecosystems.

Fourthly, the effects of climate change, such as rising sea levels, increased frequency of
extreme weather events, and disruptions to agriculture, pose significant risks to human
societies. These impacts are already being felt and are projected to intensify in the f
uture.

Lastly, while natural factors do play a role in climate change, they cannot account for
the current warming trend. Solar radiation and volcanic activity, for example, have been
relatively stable or decreasing over the past few decades, while global temperatures
have continued to rise.

In conclusion, the evidence for human-induced climate change is robust and compelling.
It's crucial that we acknowledge our role in this global issue and take collective action to
mitigate its impacts. Our future depends on it.

To be continued.
